Canal-Front Backyard: Regrade & New Sod
A canal-front backyard stripped, regraded and topped with new soil and sod, from the house and pool out to the seawall.

- The workThe yard was cleared and graded with a mini excavator, topsoil was spread and graded, and new sod was laid to the seawall. A row of palms was planted along the fence line.

What shaped the approach here
On a canal-front lot there is very little fall between the house and the water, so the grade has to be shaped carefully: enough to move water away from the house, not so much that it washes toward the bank. Sandy soil drains fast but holds almost nothing, which is why new sod needs a proper layer of screened topsoil under it rather than being laid straight onto builder sand.
