What it looks like
Clean, pale, fine sand with an even texture and no stones in it.
How big the pieces are
Fine, consistent grains: it runs through your fingers.
What it is like to walk or drive on
Soft and loose. It shifts underfoot and will not hold a shape on its own.

Masonry and mortar work, fine leveling, and bedding under some hardscape.
How it handles water
Water passes through readily, but fine sand also moves with the water, so it needs something holding it in place.
When not to use it
Not a base layer, not a growing soil, and not the material that carries the load under pavers: that is the compacted base below it.
What it gets confused with
Paver sand, play sand and septic sand. They look similar in a pile and behave differently in a job.
How it changes over time
Stays loose. Without edging, pavers or turf holding it, it migrates with rain and traffic.
Sizes are approximate. Crushed stone and shell are screened rather than cut to size, so every load holds a range of pieces and some dust.

- Deliveries have a 3 cubic yard minimum, and the delivery fee is set by ZIP code.
