Paver Sand
Bedding sand that forms the smooth, level layer directly beneath pavers.
What it is
Paver sand is spread and screeded over a compacted base to create an even bed for pavers. It helps set each paver at the right height and fills small irregularities in the base.

How it handles water
Water passes through, and the layer is deliberately thin. What keeps a paver surface dry is the base under it and the slope across it.
When not to use it
Not a base: sand alone under pavers will rut. Not a planting soil.
What it gets confused with
Paver base, which is the compacted stone layer below it, and mason sand. Which sand suits a job depends on the build-up, so ask before ordering.
How it changes over time
Locks in place as the pavers are compacted. Where water runs under an unrestrained edge it washes out, and that is usually why pavers dip.
Sizes are approximate. Crushed stone and shell are screened rather than cut to size, so every load holds a range of pieces and some dust.

How much paver sand do you need?
The bedding layer is typically thin and even. Most of the depth comes from the compacted base below. Order paver base and paver sand together.
As a general rule, one cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. Coverage changes with depth and material, so use the calculator for your numbers and we will confirm before delivery.
Before you order: a quick checklist
- Measure the length, width and planned depth. The calculator turns them into cubic yards.
- Consider depth. It changes the quantity more than most people expect. We can advise on depth for the job.
- Pick the drop spot: a firm, reachable place close to where you will use the material.
- Check access: gates, soft ground, low wires or branches and tight turns. Delivery checklist.
- Check community rules on bulk deliveries and materials if you have an HOA.
- Deliveries have a 3 cubic yard minimum, and the delivery fee is set by ZIP code.
