1. Mark and Excavate
Lay out your patio dimensions with stakes and string, then excavate about 7 to 9 inches deep to leave room for base material, sand, and pavers. Slope the area slightly away from your house — about a quarter inch per foot — so water always drains away from the foundation.
2. Build the Base
This is the step that separates a patio that lasts decades from one that heaves and shifts within a year. Compact a 4 to 6 inch layer of paver base, then add an inch of leveling sand on top, screeded flat. Skipping or skimping on base material is the single biggest reason DIY patios fail in Florida’s wet, shifting soil.
3. Set, Cut, and Lock the Pavers
Work in small sections, setting pavers tight against each other in your chosen pattern. A wet saw makes quick work of edge pieces. Once everything is laid, sweep polymeric sand into the joints and compact the whole surface with a plate compactor to lock it in place.
