Evenings are finally starting to cool off enough in Southwest Florida to actually enjoy sitting outside after dark. A backyard fire pit is one of the most requested additions we hear about this time of year, and it’s a project most homeowners can tackle themselves in a weekend.
1. Choose a Safe Location
Check your local ordinances first — many Southwest Florida municipalities and HOAs regulate fire pit placement and size. Pick a spot at least 10 feet from structures, fences, and overhanging branches, on level ground away from foot traffic.
2. Dig and Layer the Base
Dig a circle about a foot deep and 3 to 4 feet across, then fill the base with a few inches of rip rap for drainage — this keeps water from pooling under the pit and cracking your stonework over time. Rip rap’s irregular shape locks together well and lets rainwater drain straight through instead of collecting.
3. Build the Ring
Stack fire-rated block or natural limestone in a circle, staggering the joints between layers like brickwork for stability. Limestone holds up well to repeated heat cycles and gives a natural, Florida-native look that blends into most landscape styles. Three to four courses is typical for a standard-height pit.
