What it is
Rip rap protects exposed soil where moving water or runoff causes erosion. Typical uses include drainage outlets, swales, slopes, shorelines and decorative stabilization. The right stone size, filter fabric and placement depend on water flow, soil and site conditions.

What it looks like
Large, rough, angular chunks of broken limestone, grayish white and irregular.
How big the pieces are
Roughly baseball to grapefruit, with a spread of sizes in any load.
What it is like to walk or drive on
Not a walking surface. The pieces are too large and uneven to stand on comfortably.
What it is normally used for here
Seawall edges, canal and lake banks, slopes that keep washing, and the splash area where a pipe discharges.
How it handles water
Water runs freely between the pieces. Rip rap slows moving water and protects the soil behind it rather than holding water back.
When not to use it
Not for driveways, paths, or anywhere children play.
What it gets confused with
The larger 8 to 12 inch rip rap, and decorative boulders, which are chosen for looks rather than for holding a bank.
How it changes over time
Stays where it is placed. Sand and soil can wash in between the pieces, and weeds will take hold in that fill unless the edge is maintained.
Sizes are approximate. Crushed stone and shell are screened rather than cut to size, so every load holds a range of pieces and some dust.

About these sizes: the objects are rough comparisons to help you picture the material, not exact measurements, grading specifications or guarantees. The drawings on each card are enlarged so they are easy to see and are not to scale with each other. Natural stone varies. For rip rap, 3–6" and 8–12" are nominal, general size ranges, not a guarantee that every individual rock falls within those dimensions, and our loads often contain larger pieces.
