Extra-large 8–12 inch rip rap stone for erosion control at outlets, slopes and shorelines.
What it is
This is our larger rip rap: substantial individual rocks in the 8–12 inch range. Like 3–6 inch rip rap, it protects exposed soil where moving water or runoff causes erosion. The right stone size, filter fabric and placement depend on water flow, soil and site conditions.

What it looks like
Very large, rough, angular pieces of broken limestone.
How big the pieces are
Roughly grapefruit to small melon, and a load will include some larger and some smaller.
What it is like to walk or drive on
Not walkable, and not something to move by hand. Pieces this size are placed with equipment.
What it is normally used for here
Heavier shoreline and seawall protection, larger or steeper banks, and places where smaller rock has already been moved by water.
How it handles water
Very open. Water passes between the pieces with almost no resistance.
When not to use it
Not for driveways, paths or finished surfaces, and usually oversized for a small residential border.
What it gets confused with
3 to 6 inch rip rap. The jump in size is bigger in person than it sounds on paper.
How it changes over time
The most stable of the rock sizes once it is set. Sizes are nominal, so expect a range rather than uniform pieces.
Sizes are approximate. Crushed stone and shell are screened rather than cut to size, so every load holds a range of pieces and some dust.

The drawings on each card are enlarged so they are easy to see and are not to scale with each other. Natural stone varies. For rip rap, 3–6" and 8–12" are nominal, general size ranges, not a guarantee that every individual rock falls within those dimensions, and our loads often contain larger pieces.

How much rip rap 8–12″ do you need?
Erosion-control work can affect drainage, waterways and neighboring properties. Larger shoreline or stormwater projects may need engineered specifications or local permits. These are heavy individual rocks, so the truck needs a safe, accessible place to unload.
As a general rule, one cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. Coverage changes with depth and material, so use the calculator for your numbers and we will confirm before delivery.
