DOT Base Rock
Base rock laid and leveled under a gravel surface, such as the base of an RV pad.
What it is
DOT base rock is the base layer we lay and level before a finished gravel surface goes on top. On our RV pad job it went down first, inside a railroad-tie border, and was finished with #89 limestone gravel. Ask us for current specifications if your project calls for them.

What it looks like
Grey crushed limestone base material with a mix of sizes and plenty of fines.
How big the pieces are
Mixed, from small stone down to dust, which is what lets it lock together.
What it is like to walk or drive on
Firm and road-like once it is spread, wetted and compacted.
What it is normally used for here
The base layer under gravel drives, RV pads and parking areas, before a finish layer such as #89 goes on top.
How it handles water
Compacts tight and sheds water off the surface rather than through it, so the grade you build into it matters.
When not to use it
Not a decorative finish, not a planting soil, and dusty if it is left as the top layer.
What it gets confused with
Paver base, which does a similar job under pavers, and clean #57 stone, which drains instead of locking up.
How it changes over time
Hardens as it compacts and weathers. A finish layer over it keeps the dust down and stops the surface rutting.
Sizes are approximate. Crushed stone and shell are screened rather than cut to size, so every load holds a range of pieces and some dust.

How much dot base rock do you need?
Lay out and frame the area first, then spread and level the base before the top layer goes on. Measure the length, width and planned base depth. We can help work out the base and top-layer quantities together.
As a general rule, one cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. Coverage changes with depth and material, so use the calculator for your numbers and we will confirm before delivery.

- Pick the drop spot: a firm, reachable place close to where you will use the material.

- Check community rules on bulk deliveries and materials if you have an HOA.
- Deliveries have a 3 cubic yard minimum, and the delivery fee is set by ZIP code.
