What it looks like
Crushed shell in white to cream, a mix of flat broken shell pieces and finer shell grit.
How big the pieces are
Pieces around a nickel or a dime, with finer material filling the gaps.
What it is like to walk or drive on
Crunchy underfoot and noticeably softer than limestone. Comfortable to walk on and fine to drive on.
What it is normally used for here
Driveways, RV lots, side yards and paths, and anywhere the coastal Florida look is wanted.
How it handles water
Drains well while still packing down into a surface, which is why it works for drives as well as paths.
When not to use it
It tracks indoors on shoes and tires, and it is bright in full sun. Somewhere you want a dark, formal finish, it is the wrong look.
What it gets confused with
Small crushed shell, which is finer, and limestone, which is gray and sharply angular.
How it changes over time
Packs into a firm crust and whitens in the sun. Over the years shell works down into the sand beneath, so drives are usually topped up rather than rebuilt.
Sizes are approximate. Crushed stone and shell are screened rather than cut to size, so every load holds a range of pieces and some dust.

How much medium shell do you need?
Clear loose vegetation and shape the area first. Soft ground may need a compacted base, and edging helps keep shell contained. Measure the length, width and depth.
As a general rule, one cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. Coverage changes with depth and material, so use the calculator for your numbers and we will confirm before delivery.
