The Pros
Shell drains almost instantly, so you won’t be dodging puddles after a summer storm. It costs significantly less per square foot than pavers, asphalt, or concrete, and it’s simple to repair — just add and re-rake more shell over low or worn spots instead of patching a hard surface.
The Cons
Shell needs occasional top-offs as it compacts and migrates over time, and it’s not ideal if you’re set on a perfectly smooth surface for rollerblades or strollers. It can also shift under heavy vehicle turns if the base isn’t compacted well at installation.
Installation Tips
Start with a compacted base layer, then add crushed shell on top and compact again — skipping the base is the top reason shell driveways rut and shift. Most driveways do well with 3 to 4 inches of depth, edged with plastic or metal landscape border to keep the shell from spreading into the lawn. Medium shell holds its shape better for daily driving, while smaller shell gives a finer, walkway-friendly finish.
