Topsoil vs. Compost: What Your Garden Needs

Short answer: Topsoil is the body of soil you plant into; compost is the organic amendment you mix into it. In sandy Southwest Florida beds you usually want both: topsoil for depth, compost worked in so the soil actually holds water and nutrients.

“Just add dirt” is one of the most common mistakes we see with new garden beds. Topsoil and compost do different jobs, and knowing which one (or both) your fall garden needs makes the difference between plants that limp along and plants that take off.

What Topsoil Does

Topsoil is the bulk material — it fills raised beds, levels low spots, and gives roots physical structure to grow into. Quality topsoil has a balanced mix of sand, silt, and clay, but on its own it’s usually low in the organic matter plants need to actually thrive.

What Compost Does

Compost is decomposed organic matter — it feeds soil biology, improves drainage in dense spots, and helps sandy Southwest Florida soil actually hold onto water and nutrients instead of letting everything drain straight through. Mixed into topsoil, it turns inert fill into living, fertile ground.

The Right Mix for Fall Beds

For new vegetable beds, a mix of roughly 60% topsoil to 40% compost gives you the structure and fertility fall crops need. For beds that are already established, top-dressing with an inch or two of compost each season keeps nutrients replenished without disturbing existing roots. Unplugged Designs delivers both topsoil and organic compost in bulk to the Fort Myers area, pre-mixed or separate, so your beds get exactly what they need.
