What it looks like
Shredded wood mulch, dark brown, with strands rather than chips.
How big the pieces are
Shredded strands a few inches long that knit together on a bed.
What it is like to walk or drive on
Soft and springy. Fine to walk across in a bed, though it is not a path surface.
What it is normally used for here
Planting beds, tree rings and bed borders, where it holds moisture, slows weeds and finishes the look of a yard.
How it handles water
Rain passes through while the layer shades the soil, so beds dry out more slowly than bare sand.
When not to use it
Not a soil, not a base, and not something to pile against trunks or stack deep against the house.
What it gets confused with
Compost. Mulch sits on top as a cover; compost is dug in to feed the soil.
How it changes over time
Fades in the sun and breaks down over a season or two, so beds are refreshed rather than permanently mulched. Heavy rain can float it out of a bed that has no edge.
Sizes are approximate. Crushed stone and shell are screened rather than cut to size, so every load holds a range of pieces and some dust.
Planning your order
How much mulch do you need?
Remove weeds and debris first, and keep mulch off trunks, stems and walls. A layer around two to three inches is common for many beds. Measure carefully and allow for settling.
As a general rule, one cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. Coverage changes with depth and material, so use the calculator for your numbers and we will confirm before delivery.
Before you order: a quick checklist
- Measure the length, width and planned depth. The calculator turns them into cubic yards.
- Consider depth. It changes the quantity more than most people expect. We can advise on depth for the job.
- Pick the drop spot: a firm, reachable place close to where you will use the material.
- Check access: gates, soft ground, low wires or branches and tight turns. Delivery checklist.
- Check community rules on bulk deliveries and materials if you have an HOA.
- Deliveries have a 3 cubic yard minimum, and the delivery fee is set by ZIP code.
