Container Gardening 101 for Your Lanai

Not everyone in Southwest Florida has room for a full raised bed, and that’s fine — a lanai, patio, or even a sunny doorstep can grow a surprising amount of food in containers. Here’s how to get it right.

Pick the Right Container

Drainage holes are non-negotiable — without them, our heavy rain will drown roots in a container fast. Size matters too: herbs and lettuce are happy in a 6 to 8 inch pot, while tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant need at least a 5-gallon container to develop a full root system.

Use the Right Soil, Not Yard Dirt

Straight yard soil compacts hard in a container and drains poorly. A blend of quality topsoil and organic compost gives potted plants the lighter, nutrient-rich mix they need, and it’s worth using real compost rather than a bag of cheap filler — container plants rely entirely on what you put in the pot.

What to Plant Now

Basil, rosemary, and mint thrive in containers year-round here, and September is a great time to add lettuce, peppers, and dwarf tomato varieties bred for pots. Water a little more often than you would an in-ground bed — containers dry out faster, especially through October’s lingering warm afternoons.

Unplugged Designs delivers bulk topsoil and organic compost, so filling a whole row of containers doesn’t mean a dozen trips to the store.
